I've never played the game Okami, so I went with a more traditional approach and transferred my Amaterasu design into the style of woodblock prints. Done by hand in freestyle sumi brush (including the red flames) with digital color.
It's red, which looks pink the lighter it's applied. Japanese woodblock prints are actually fairly recent in terms of the overall history of such arts (like the japanophile movements in Europe at the turn of the century--heard of Art Nouveau? ) and they had many inks.
This is an excellent way of bringing the game's concept back to its roots. I also like how you chose to depict Amaterasu in a more traditional style, compared to some of the more anime-style interpretations I've seen so far. The brush strokes look crisp and solid, but not too clean, which suits both the game and the fact that you used sumi-e brush techniques here.

Thanks for the crit! Actually, I had to force myself to ink somewhat "messy." Most sumi paintings that I've studied are clean, but the game art is much more rough.
I agree with you that the art in the game is rougher, but I also find it a bit more organic, which is also pretty in its own way, given the game's central focus.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
